If you have curly hair, then you know that finding the right mix of hair care products as well as
caring for your hair in general, can be a bit daunting. Because curly hair tends to be somewhat
dryer and more brittle then straight hair, it typically requires more care.
One thing to keep in mind with curly hair is to limit the shampooing of your hair to no more then
twice a week. The more often you shampoo, the more you strip your hair of the natural oils that
are designed to protect it.
After you shampoo your hair, make sure that you use a conditioner that is designed to
moisturize or is specifically designed for curly hair to replenish your hairs moisture. You should
also use a leave in condition either on a daily basis or at least every other day.
When you are choosing hair care products, choose products that are geared specifically for
curly hair.
These will ensure that you protect your hair and keep it moisturized. When combing your hair,
avoid using a narrow toothed comb or brush. To minimize incidents of breakage or frizzing, use
a wide toothed comb. Avoid using a brush period. Brushing curly hair tends to increase the
frizziness.
One of the best ways to detangle your hair is in the shower. Start by making sure your hair is
wet and conditioned to prevent breakage. Use your fingers to start untangling then complete the
task with a wide toothed comb, starting from the end and finishing at the root of the hair. Rinse
your head and try to retain half of the conditioner that is in your hair. Trying to detangle your hair
while dry will cause breakage as well as frizzing/ Avoid using a hair dryer.
Let your hair air dry to minimize frizzing. If you need your hair to dry quickly, use a towel to blot it
dry, but do not rub it. It is recommended that you deep condition you hair once a month to
re-moisturized your hair and scalp, If you are prone to extra dry and frizzy hair, you can deep
condition more then once a month.
When you are styling your hair, use a small amount of styling product. Make sure to use a
styling product that is specifically designed for curly hair.
To control your curls naturally, take 1 to 2 inch sections of damp hair and roll them up into little
balls. Secure them in place with clips or bobby pins and let them dry completely. Once they are
dry, let the curls loose. Don’t brush them, just turn your head over and finger through your curls.
If you have color treated hair, make sure that you regularly use a leave in conditioner every other
day along with a twice monthly deep conditioning. Coloring your hair can dry it out. When
choosing an at home hair coloring kit, opt for one that is designed to add moisture to hair.
If you choose to straighten your hair, choose a straightening iron that has a ceramic plate.
Because using any sort of hair care tools that have heat can cause your hair to dry quicker.
Make sure to re-condition your hair frequently to replenish the moisture in your hair.
Caring for your curly doesn't have to be that tough, believe me there are those who would love to
trade their boring straight hair for your crowning glory!!
