When was the last time you walked into a department store only to see
shelves lined with a dizzying array of foundations, powders and
concealers only to walk still having no idea which one is best for you?
It’s very easy to get confused on which one is better, they all seem to
promise to make your skin look absolutely flawless, blemish free
and glowing. Each a different type and style with 100’s of color
choices and price tags. It’s a wonder anyone even wears foundation
as hard as it might be to pick the right one.
Did you know there is about four basic types of foundations, without
counting mineral powder, there are four types of concealers to
choose from and each style works a bit different depending on your
skin type and what type of cover you want.
The ideal foundation isn’t meant mask your skin; they blend into the skin
so different formulas are going to work better depending on your skin type.
Four basic types of foundation are:
Tinted Moisturizer: This type of foundation moisturizing your skin
but covers very little of it in color. They deliver a very sheer
wash of color, best on skin that is pretty clear and not good for
camouflaging any serious imperfections.
Liquid Foundation: These types are usually sheer or translucent
but can be thick and come variety of ‘weights’. Meaning there is
water-based, mousse based, oil-free, mineral based and more.
Usually those who are acne-prone use those that are oil-free, with the
thicker formulas can mute the appearance of blemishes. You need to
be careful with your choice because they can also cause breakouts as
well.
Cream Foundation or Cream to Powder Foundation: These come
packed in jars and often offer a very thick, rich coverage good for
those looking to cover up things such as scars, red patches and really
bad breakouts. But if you are having breakouts that would need a
heavy coverage then it’s time to look into what is causing the
breakouts. A thick foundation can clog your pores. If you are
acne-prone then a liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer might be
your better choice.
Stick Foundation: This is just a foundation that comes in a form of
a stick and you apply it with a brush or your fingers. They are very
good to use as concealers as well because of their formula.
Now on to this writer's personal favorite: mineral powder foundations.
Mineral Powder Foundations: They are feel weightless on your skin, they
can cover up little imperfections without feeling heavy. They leave
your skin with a soft polished finish as if you are glowing from within.
If you buy one and it’s not quite the right shade for you, it’s
possible to combine two to create a custom color. They are easy to
apply as well as you can add more or less depending on how much
coverage you are looking for. They work great as concealers as well.
Next time you are at the department store looking over the variety of
foundations, I do hope this article has helped at least clear up what
the types are, what they are used for, and what works for you. If at
all possible ask for a sample before buying the whole product.
