As I lay here
Staring off into the dark
With you sleeping there next to me…
I make a decision
I don’t want a friend with privileges
I wanted someone who loves only me…
Not just because we have great sex
And I know you feel its ok to be doing it
Without being in love..
I know when I’ll tell you
I won’t be doing this again
You will be asking me
Don’t you like me anymore?
And I understand I will be telling you
Maybe I like you too much
I just can’t deal with the thought
Of tonight you might be
Sleeping with someone else..
Another friend who has the same privilege
I just can’t deal with that
And if you cared enough about me
You wouldn’t ask it of me…
I reach out
Tracing your face lightly with my fingertips
To take the memory of you with me…
I sit up and lightly kiss you on the cheek
For the last time
As I dress there in the dark
I realize that because we are just friends
I going to be breaking this off
As a friend would
With a text message from my cell phone
Later on today because after all
We are just friends with privileges
And we will be nothing more.
